My Breakfast’s boring... how can I brighten up the start to my days!

Cheryl, lead dietitian at EatatEase has some advice on how to make your breakfast a little more interesting.

When we think of breakfast most of us will always think of cereal or toast,  but breakfast hasn’t always got to be that boring. There are so many other healthy options for breakfast, all it takes is a little planning and preparation!

Breakfast should ideally contain foods from different food groups, such as carbohydrates (e.g. Cereal, bread, crackers), Protein (e.g. milk, yoghurts, nuts), Fruit and Vegetables (e.g. piece of fruit, fruit or vegetable juice, grilled vegetables).

Here are some easy breakfast ideas to get you started:

Either choose a glass of fruit Juice or piece of fruit as this compliments breakfast and gives you your first serving of fruit for the day (remember to aim for a minimum of 5 fruit and vegetables a day).

  • Bowl of cereal, avoid sugary ones, go for wholegrain and use semi or skimmed milk.
  • Wholemeal toast, top with:
    • A poached egg,
    • Grilled bacon, mushrooms and low fat spread.
    • 1 egg scrambled with 30g smoked salmon pieces.
    • Grilled mushrooms with a sprinkle of grated cheese.
    • Baked beans.
    • Sardines/kippers with tomatoes & mushrooms.
  • Bagels are very low in fat, use some reduced sugar jam
  • Chopped up fruit such as apple, banana, pear, topped with natural yoghurt.
  • 1 pitta bread filled with 2 rashers of lean grilled bacon and grilled sliced mushroom.
  • 2 crumpets with 2 teaspoons of reduced fat sugar.
  • Milk shake made with skimmed milk, blended with bananas and berries and topped with wheatgerm.
Hope some of these ideas appeal! We have even more breakfast ideas at our website www.EatatEase.com
